“A third of UK chief executives surveyed by PwC don’t even believe their own business will be economically viable in a decade’s time.” (Financial Times)
If the above statement didn't shock you, perhaps you should read it again?
The above quote, taken from an article by boardintelligence.com, also notes that since 2008, CEOs "have become less charismatic, less strategic and more focused on execution...we seem to be in the era of the cost-cutters, not the innovators."

Whilst this assessment should set alarm bells ringing, it also highlights a significant source of competitive advantage: effective leadership!
Good strategic leaders always have an eye on the future as well as the present. They are visionary, courageous, decisive (not rash!) and have a good understanding of both themselves and the wider environment. Armed with these attributes, they can flex their style according to the needs of different situations for maximum effect.
Such leadership skills are rarely innate, but they can be developed.
